BSG Game Demo Released!
They finally released a very good and playable demo of "Beyond The Red Line", a BSG mod of the opensource Freespace 2 engine. It's really cool! They seem to have planned the release right after the season finale when the fans are at their hungriest. It's currently only for Windoze, but Mac and Linux versions are coming soon. They'll also be online multiplayer modes when they release the final version. There are aspects of both that I like. BtRL needs to enable thrusting while using "glide mode" (which is in the works, requires some code changes in FS2). That will make it much more useful. As it is, gliding when someone is on your tail makes you a sitting duck. Also, I'm not sure if it's just me or the hardware I'm playing on, but I find that when I'm being shot at from behind, I can't hear incoming fire OR the shots that are hitting me. Makes it difficult to dodge a sneak attack. Seems like there are some quirks in the positional audio code. Probably related to the engine sound cutting out when you glide and turn 180 from your flight path. _________________ Lt. Nerde Verde |

I just gave this a try. It's not a significant effort to install on Ubuntu and the game is certainly fun. There are only two real missions though. Most of the people who were working on it have abandoned the project are now working on another BSG-based game on the Freespace2 engine. |

Thanks for the info Ish. It sounded like it was open for general space quake type game play. I may try to get it working again next weekend. The update didn't work right for me either. I played it without the update. There's an online multiplayer option, with server info here, but I haven't tried that. |
