50K to the Cash Cow(s)...
in the name of the first Viper that can answer the question sparked by:

Please fix the duel loss if you exit sector to early bug.

Paraphrased: "What is the difference between a 'barrel roll' and a 'point roll'... and it *has* to include one key word in the definition"...

[hint]it has everything to do with gravity

A point roll is a simple roll about the long axis of the craft, sometimes involving stops at the 90 degree points as part of a demonstration. Not really a tactical maneuver.

A barrel roll involves pulling the craft up from level flight during a turn and rolling away from the direction of the turn, returning to the direction of the turn when the plane is level again. It is used to bleed off speed to a) Prevent overshooting the target during a pursuit (move from lead to lag pusuit), or b) Cause a pusuer to overshoot and end up in front of their intended target and vulnerable to counterattack.

Very, very close (actually quite accurate)... what about the "gravity" part?

Not entirely sure what exact wording you are fishing for, but I suppose that a barrel roll in the traditional sense doesn't achieve the same purpose without gravity, since it wouldn't result in a reduction in speed without pulling against gravity.

As you can see, I'm not a pilot, I just play one on the Internet.

(and very well, too... I might add)...

I'll send you an email... (and I think you have about 80% of the answer)...

Here you go... the answer...

Please fix the duel loss if you exit sector to early bug.

So, now I have 100,000 for the cows... (50K in Nerde's name... and 50K in LeberMac's name <--- and *that* is stinking funny!)...

and you know a bit more about "rolls" now...

and I'll share another little ditty... (if you don't know... I'm a "skydiver"... I jump out of "perfectly good airplanes" for fun - that's where the "leapfrog" comes from)...

my first "experience" with a barrel roll came from a good friend and jump pilot of mine... I'd been a pilot for a while myself, but had never "crossed boundaries" (always straight and level)...

I'm jumping that day... he's hauling the load... and I had an equipment malfunction in the airplane on the way up to altitude (we check all the time)... one that prevented me from jumping on that run... I had to ride the airplane down... (by the way, I've taken off more than 1700 times in an aircraft than I have landed in an aircraft)... the other guys left the airplane at altitude, and I was bummed... Dennis (the pilot) saw that... after fixing my rig on the ground.. it was getting late, and folks were leaving... I couldn't get a "load" together to justify another jump...

Dennis walks over to me and says "put yer rig on, and meet me at the plane..." w00t! We climbed in... and started to altitude... and it is getting dark... (we jump at night all the time, but you have to have a *special* waiver from the FAA - they basically close the airspace you are in for it - and we did *not* have a night waiver for this jump...) We are just getting to altitude, and the sun is *just* starting to disappear on the horizon... and it was a fabulous sunset... I'm kneeling by the open door, getting ready to leave... and I look over to Dennis to tell him *thanks* for the special ride... and he makes it more so...

He pulled the *perfect* barrel roll... about the sun as the axis, and it was on my front porch... really beautiful... I left, and had the greatest "solo" jump watching the sun disappear...

Dennis later taught me how to do "barrel rolls"...

I guess it's why I have the affinity towards them....

That sounds awesome,

1700?!

damn... err, I've landed in 1 less plane than I've taken off in, but numerous commercial airplane failure victims can say the same. Need to make it to a second jump, then I'll have those dead buggers one upped!

But seriously, quite apart from my totally inappropriate humor, That's awesome. Whereabouts do you jump?

Re: 50K to the Cash Cow(s)...
Uh... 1784, to be exact... and counting...

I was an instructor for six years - static line, Instructor aided deployment (IAD), and Tandem... (I also did a bunch of "unofficial" Accelerated Freefall (AFF) jumps... but as an "observer"... hehe)... I have even delivered a pig to a pig roast via parachute - right over downtown Wichita... his name was Clarence... and he was tasty! (Dennis, the guy in the ditty above, took Clarice... a smaller pig)...

I jump all over. Mostly local (kansas)... but I used to routinely fly to Oklahoma (Cushing) and do stuff there... as I am originally from Okla... less there lately... there are "meets" all over the country, called "boogies"... I jump in Arizona during winter a lot (Skydive Arizona - located at Eloy, halfway between Phoenix and Tucson)... and I *used* to always enjoy the boogie in Iowa on Labor Day weekend... known as "couch freaks"... it is a "no rules" boogie... more relaxed in nature... but some great skydives and fantastic night life... (well, about as much fun you can have out in the middle of nowhere... corn fields all around and a bunch of crazy skydivers... but that is about all I can say about that... er, think "beacon rides" for the n00bs, and "blue bottle" lines... (nitrous oxide is contained in bottles painted blue)...

But alas... I am getting old... and the jumps are becoming less frequent... I used to *live* at the dropzone... and I learned patience there... it's all perspective... and I'm going to be one "interesting fellow" at the old folks home... hehe...

[edit]fyi... I not only go "up"... I go down... I am a PADI gold card holder... hehe...[/edit]

You should come round the Monterey/Santa Cruz area, I'm Naui certified, and the diving is nice, as long as you've got a thick wetsuit :D

You ARE gonna be an interestin ancient, sitting in the old folks home, fragging pirates, and telling stories about the time: "I was so high, I was flying, literally"
