Re: Tornado
I can give you an update, if you like... I spent a couple days "in country" trying to help those affected right after the event, and we are still helping the community. The scene in real life was nothing like that in the pic. Trust me on that. Think about walking into a "field" with roads... but no landmark indication that anything else was ever there... and debris everywhere.

We've had a *lot* of community help... there are still people displaced (no kidding), but the area is coming back. Some folks have decided not to rebuild, but most have. There is an amazing spirit amongst the folks...

Re: Tornado
wow you mean you have been there? How about rebuilding a bit more SOLID than slabs of concrete with wood and paper walls? I could understand this where cost of building materials are high, like in FL, but Kansas seems right in the middle of the country. It does not seem to be a good investment to build that light. I think I would move somewhere else if I had lost my home there.

Re: Tornado
There is "spirit", though... and the chances of getting nuked by a twister are really remote. But, I guess we live in tornado alley... and it's just what it is. Rather like those in New Orleans... below sea level, and building levies.

My house has a "safe room" in the basement... concrete block with rebar reinforced walls and ceiling, and a steel door. It's where I keep my safe with valuable papers... flashlights, and extra water. It's an everyday thing, I guess. And it's where I'll be in case we have an event here. The house may blow away, but that's what insurance is for.

Frankly, unless everyone decides to build berm houses (structurally adequate, energy efficient, ugly as heck)... we have to deal with what we have available.
