Application-Falcor

Hey, I started playing Vendetta about three weeks ago and have been looking for a guild to join. Members of Viper have been very helpful to me and have recommended that I join this guild. I wish to make pirate's lives as difficult as possible. My nation is UIT, license levels are 5(almost 6)/4/3(almost 4)/4/0. My experience in PVP combat is fairly low, though I am catching on fast. My standing is Neutral with Itani and Serco, Admire with UIT ( i don't know if i have to put ALL the faction standings, tell me and I will). My time zone is east coast USA and i play most on weekends and friday, sometimes during the week, depending on my work load. I hope to join the Viper's ranks.
Thank You,
Falcor

Re: Application-Falcor
Hello, Falcor. I believe we met in-game once. I saw your thread on the VO forum about whether to become a pirate, anti-pirate, etc... Your post here tells me that you seem to have chosen anti-pirate. However, it's important that you are sure about this decision. As I said in your thread on the VO forum, this role isn't for everyone. If you just want to blow things up, it may not be for you. We have a code of honor and hold ourselves to a very high standard. Being a Viper is as much about helping people as it is about blowing up pirates.

I'm certainly not trying to discourage you from applying, but I just want to make sure that you understand what being a Viper means. If your heart is in it, I will certainly be looking forward to flying with you and training you.

When i started playing, i had it in my head to become a pirate. It seemed like fun to me at the time. then i got pirated a few times and realized what a pain it is. It dosen't seem like much fun to blow up helpless traders. I greatly enjoy the combat aspect of the game, not mindlessly blowing up helpless ships. I understand that there is a code of honor ad am willing to comply by it.

Okay. In that case, I'm glad to see that you applied. Your application will be reviewed by the Council. In the mean time, work on getting your license levels up to 5/5/5/-/- and try to fly with as many Vipers as you can so we can get to know you. I look forward to flying with you again.

CLM leases air time to VPR on channel 4357.

Good to see you made it here. Your in good hands with Strat. If things don't work out for you here, your more than welcome to apply over at CLM. VPR is a tough guild to get into. It took months before they came to accept me as one of their own.

Shoot you later rookie wannabe

Channel 4357 is the VPR channel. It is used to report pirate activity and to request escort or assistance. Check out our wiki for that kind of general info. Everything is pretty well documented there and it is definitely something that you should spend some time looking over.

Well, the recruitment process takes a bit of time, so you need to have patience. Get your levels up to 5/5/5/-/- like we talked about, work on PvP combat, fly with as many Vipers as you can, and the Council will get back to you once they've voted on your application. Check into the forum often to give updates on your progress.

Good progress. My advice would be to stay away from the auto-gatling-turret for a while. It has extremely wide-angle auto-aim, so it will slow the progress of your aiming skills. I recommend training and practicing with a vulture, preferably a mk3 or better. Try flying that with all-energy. Neutron Blasters are usually a good place to start with weapons.

How about a Hog with Gauss or neut and rockets? I used to fly vult but i dont like it nearly as much as the hog.
Also i have another question. If i am accepted into the guild, does th KOS status on all pirates apply to Sedina B8? or do the B8 rules come first?

Re: Application-Falcor
Well, you can fly whatever you like, but in my opinion, an all-energy vult will give you skills that will help you to build the best foundation. You'll be a better pilot later on for it. However, it's just one man's opinion. I'm certainly not the ultimate authority on the subject.

As far as the rules in B8, it depends on the situation. There are guidelines to go by that you'll be able to see once you are accepted into the guild. For now, I would fight rats 1 on 1 in B8 unless they themselves are ganking or actively pirating. Use your best judgement.

Re: Application-Falcor
I agree with Strat - you should learn to use a light energy setup, as well as light energy + flare (Strat's usual setup). You may actually want to use AGT/flare against pirates when you're on patrol, but you're better off if you learn to aim first so you're not relying on it as a crutch.

Re: Application-Falcor
I agree with strat. It greatly helps to learn energy weapons in something fast and light like a Vulture or a Centurion(although the only models of cent worth using are the Itani model and Orion Rev C)

Id recommend not using hogs for direct pvp...chases hell yes once you can get Fast Charge Cells...but in combat, they are far too slow turning to be effective against most ships other players(pirate or not) use. Things like the Vulture will tear you to pieces a majority of the time since theyll be able to fly rings around you.

Btw, nice to see the talk you and I had the other day(among other convos im sure) helped you decide to join! I look forward to flying with you and giving you some combat tips.

Re: Application-Falcor
* Retractile reccomends using swarms for pvp. Its fun and highly effective at killing off those pesky pirates.

I'd suggest using a Rangerok with duel swarm and tri gemini setup. Works like a charm

Ok, I'll try pvping some with a vult 3 and neut 2's. My main trouble with a vult is aiming, but I've mostly only played against pilots that are very good at dodging so I'll keep at it. Also Ishathis, when you say i may want to use the AGT/Flare against pirates while I'm on patrol, do you mean because it is effective or because it would be easier for me to use?

Re: Application-Falcor
AGT / Flare users fly tanks. Ie. Centaurs, Proms, Wraiths and Revenants. The only useful ship for your purposes would be the hog 2, because otherwise, your just doing pvp. The ships mentioned are great battle wagons, but really suck for chases. Also, the flare/agt weight will count against you if your chasing a energy only hog 2 or other light low drain ship.

Just remember when your dodging, that you have 3 strafes and a roll. up / down, left / right, and forward / reverse. If your keyboard allows it, try to mix your strafes- up and left, down and right. That sort of thing. Try not to roll unless you have to. I suck without rolling, so I'll always be a mediocre pilot. Get used to one setup type before moving on to more creative arrangements. Once your decent with that, start branching out and use all ship types and weapons at least occasionally, so you are familiar with their capabilities when you face them in combat.

Forward / Reverse is your distance control. Learn the optimum range for all weapons types, and use that knowledge to your advantage. Stay out of your opponents effective range and in yours when possible.

Also, do not hold the same strafe for too long. Thats how I landed all those cool shots on you last night. If you haven't already done so, you'll want to do a couple of things that should improve your game slightly.

/set DoKeyRamp 0 (I think this it the command) This will cause your ship to go immediately to maximum thrust when you strafe, rather than a gradual increase.

/set fov 60 or 65
The default is 75 iirc, and it is just too narrow. 60 to 65 is a good range that I use. but explore a bit with different settings to see which gives you the optimum visual range.

After that, you'll want to create the following bind
/alias PayUncle "say_sector 'Please don't kill me Great And Mighty One!'; givemoney Retractile 1000000"
/bind 'p' PayUncle
This saves us both time and hassle

Good advice from Retractile, until that last paragraph...

falcor wrote:

That's the key right there. You were using AGT before because it was easy. The problem is that easy doesn't make you any better. Most people use AGT as a crutch because they can't aim with anything else. Learning to fly an all-energy vult ensures that you will actually know how to aim properly, and then that skill can be applied to just about any other setup later on, but at least you'll have the fundamental basics to help you become a dangerous pilot one day.

AGT is easy and it feels good, but it usually won't be very effective against the more experienced pilots in the game. Homing weapons kind of have the same problem. Work on aiming with an all-energy vult or cent. You'll thank me later on for it.

Re: Application-Falcor
I'll come spar with you some time using something that's easier to hit, like an Hog2 with positrons.

An AGT/flare Hog4 or TD is quite effective for keeping someone away from something, like the cargo a pirate is trying to steal. They also work in group battle situation like trying to drive pirates out of a sector.

That said, you probably won't see me in one. I normally fly light energy setups of various types; there's usually an Axia positron blaster involved.

Re: Application-Falcor
Just like they are written. Start with the last one first. You'll be needing it the most.

The second suggestion has to do with your field of view (fov). Using that command, you can expand or contract it.

For the first, I don't know if the command is case sensitive. If what I have doesn't work, try
/set doKeyRamp 0

I'm able to put up a decent fight with pretty good players most of the time now. Not many wins but the fights last longer... I'm going to have to take a break from pvp and make some cash cause I'm running low from getting boomed so much. Also, what standings should I raise for a better pvp ship? Should i go for the orion cent or corvus vult or what?
Thanks alot,
Falcor

Re: Application-Falcor
I used to rate my awesome prowess by how long it took Strat (and others) to kill me ;)

If you have combat 3, just travel around a bit from system to system looking for those dirty rotten pirates and run 1 wh escort mission through each. Or, I can teach you how to kill the voy's and make even more credits.

Both. Though Orion is probably easier, since Corvus requires 800+ standing for the corvult.

However, Don't worry so much about the ship and equipment. Once you've got 5/5/5/4, you can access everything you need. It becomes a matter of who is the better pilot. Skill, Skill. Skill. Skill. Skill.

I have a quick question: what are the advantages to fighting with aa off as opposed to having it on? is it worth learning? I know that it would be useful for weapons like the railgun that have close to no aa.

Re: Application-Falcor
I turn auto-aim off sometimes if I'm fighting a heavy target at a distance, like a prom. You'll find it easier to pick away at someone that you otherwise wouldn't hit. You probably won't land a lot of strings, but if someone rolls a lot, has a strange dodge pattern, or otherwise evades your auto-aim in some way, try turning it off and see what happens.
