Advice for a Newb
Hey folks,

I've just started playing (~9 hrs) and am a fairly casual player, but down the road I think I'd be interested in trying to join the Vipers or at least flying along side. My question is what advice you Vipers would have for a relative newbie in terms of licensing-up and gaining experience. I'm currently 3/3/2/2/0, and have been trying to take it slow and even in terms of licensing. What's the best/most productive way to spend my newbie time so that I can, in short order, be ready to Fight The Good Fight?

The best way to level up depends on what nation you are. If you are Serco/Itani then you can do BP (boarder patrol) once you hit combat 4 license. Ask on channel 11 (nation chat) if anyone is willing to help you with BP, start a group and start leveling. BP is the fastest way to level. My recommendation for ship load-out is a light two-gun ship (serco vult or IBG cent) with gauss for bots. If you are UIT, do large hive skirmishes. Its worth noting you get 4x the combat rewards in an ion storm.

One of the good things to do before you start learning PVP is get access to good ships and weapons outside of nation space. You do this by gaining faction standing with independent companies. TPG is the best to start, because once they admire you you get access to the Behemoth XC, which has 200cu of storage. Bulk procurement missions are best for quickly gaining faction standing, and the XC helps a lot with that. Once you have TPG, Orion and Axia are my other two favorites. Orion has some great fighters available in grey space (Orion cent rev c). Granted, Orion ships aren't terrific for pirate hunting, but they are great for pvp training. Axia has the Axia Accelerated Positron blaster (AAP), which is one of my favorite weapons. Another great company to get at least decent standing (respect, +200) with is Ineubus. They have the Raven, which is an exceptional light gun.

When it comes to loadouts and ships for The Good Fight, check out our wiki ( viperguild.com/wiki ). Many of our members post their favorite loadouts and ships on their pages. When you are looking for pvp training, either message any Viper in-game or send us an email (our emails are also on the wiki) to arrange a time to meet in-game.

It's also worth noting that we will train and help any player who asks for it. By that same token, we also take into consideration the applications of any pilots dedicated to The Good Fight regardless of age or license-levels.

Thanks Atice - that's really helpful. I'll try to start with BP tonight, and I'll keep in mind raising my standing with the independent companies - hadn't realized how important that was.

Welcome. Corvus is also a nice one to have if you don't have many levels, since they have severely lax restrictions on levels (and will arm anything you can get your hands on). Xi Xang is another good one to have, just because its ubiquitous. Nevertheless, I would start with TGP, Orion and Axia. Also, if you ask a TGFT member nicely, they might tell you where to find the item the bulk procurements are looking for closer than the listed location. The procurement missions don't care where the items come from, they just care that they get them (this means you can stockpile items at a given station, take the procurement mission at that station, load your ship with the cargo, leave the station, then dock, mission completed).

Since most of our pirate huntings / escorting (not to mention the vast majority of pvp) happens in grey space, we need access to good ships/weps in grey. Not to mention that my favorite weapons are not sold by the 3 nations.

Glad to hear you may be interested in becoming a Viper, Dascoma! We are always looking for good pilots to join us. Atice gave very good advice. I would do BP/BS, or HS until you get up to at least 5/5/5/-/-, then I would work heavily on PvP around Sedina B8. An all-energy Vulture Mk3 is a good combat training ship, but any of the more advanced light fighters will work as well. Also, I believe you are Itani, so once you get your licenses up a bit, you want to work on getting your Serco standing up as well since VPR is a neutral guild. Anyway, I look forward to flying with you, Dascoma.

Thanks Strat - the advice from you & Atice is exactly what I was looking for. One question: how do I improve my Serco standing? Is it the same as for factions - i.e. by taking missions? And can that be done regardless of current standing? (In other words if I'm already low in Serco standing, are there opportunities to raise it?)

In any event, I'm going to focus for now on the things you guys suggest - BP/BS/HS until I get my licenses up, as well as procurement for independent factions.

In short, kill hive bots in serco territory until you have -599 standing with them. From there, do bulk procurements. Be wary of the Serco SF when you first enter Serco territory to kill hive bots.

and don't be put off by dying to the turrets when you try to enter Serco space. It is the random game where you die, try again and again until you finally get through.

I came through on my 4th attempt. If you can make arrangements for the guys from EMS to come and heal you while you do botting in "hostile" space, it makes your life so much easier.

Oh, if you can, take an escort mission that moves into Serco space, it makes the turrets shoot a bit slower (I think I have noticed)

Always happy to hear someone has interest in VPR! Once Maaliks corvus training missions are back up (you can get them at any corvus barracks) I suggest taking those also, because Maalik is an excellent PVP'er and his advice is something all us old timers use in combat.
